Where there’s wood, there’s brass

It’s a console table that now graces the hallway of Fiona Gilfillan’s home in East Lothian.

Fiona is our second student on our new month-long intermediate course and, apart from her console table, has also restored another old piece of furniture and is completing the restoration of a third table.

Fiona is a keen woodworking hobbyist, and first came to the Chippendale school two years ago on one of our one-week introductory courses.

Her console table is made from an elm top and ash body and legs.  It has a beautifully-shaped elm drawer.

It also has brass splines and the shoulder of the table sits on four brass pillars.

To extend the brass detailing, the top of the table is also inlaid with lines of brass, adding an imaginative design flourish to a fine piece of work.

Fiona has learned more than she ever thought she would learn in just a month, and her console table has achieved a quality she didn’t think she possessed.

Details of our intermediate course can be found here, with students able to specify, subject to demand, when they would like to start.

The course is taught by Alan McGovern, who has over 30 years of experience, and will only have a maximum of two students at a time – making it a real one-to-one learning experience.
