We’re excited to bring back our popular Scottish upholstery course this summer, taking place in the beautiful East Lothian countryside. Even better, we’re welcoming a new face to lead it: experienced upholsterer and educator Rose Whittington.
Introducing Rose
Originally from South Africa, Rose fell in love with upholstery after taking a short course 35 years ago. With a background in maths teaching and a master’s in education, she is certainly fit to join our team of expert tutors. Since moving to Scotland in the early 90s, she’s taught upholstery for East Lothian Council and Jewel & Esk Valley College and for over a decade, she’s also run her own successful upholstery teaching business across the Lothians. We’re delighted to have Rose lead this year’s course and share her skills with our students
Course Curriculum
Running from 14–18 July 2025 in Haddington, Scotland, the upholstery course offers five full days of hands-on learning. You’ll explore core techniques including:
- Securing webbing
- Sewing hourglass springs
- Tying springs to the frame
- Attaching jute tarpaulin
- Creating a scrim roll
- Working with horsehair and padding
- Covering your piece in calico and final fabric
You’ll also develop finishing skills such as:
- Cutting fabric for corners (for both traditional and foam work)
- Applying piping and gimp
- Managing fabric around tricky shapes such as chair arms

What to Bring
Attendees are required to bring a chair to upholster. An old dining chair with arms is ideal, in addition to around one metre of fabric for the final cover. Not sure what fabric to choose? Rose will be happy to offer guidance.
Booking Info
The course fee is £500, which includes all tuition and tools. Spaces are limited to just 10 participants, so early booking is recommended. Full course details and the application form are now available on our website here.
