Looking for things to do when you’re retired? How to make the most out of your retirement

Experts agree that the first quarter of the year is an ideal time to retire. Not only does it offer a fresh start to the year, but it also aligns well with tax planning. While it might not sound glamorous, it’s definitely something worth considering now we are in a new year.

In this blog, we’ll explore a variety of creative and healthy ways to enjoy this exciting new chapter. Whether you dream of mastering a hobby like woodworking, would like to travel to new destinations, or give back through volunteering, we’ll help you carve out a retirement that is as fulfilling as it is enjoyable.

Travel and Adventure

With no rigid schedule to hold you back, this chapter of life is the perfect time to embrace adventure. With Scotland’s breathtaking scenery, rich culture, and welcoming charm, a road trip through its winding countryside is an adventure waiting to happen.

As you explore, why not stop by Chippendale School? Our weekend woodworking courses are the perfect addition to your travels, offering the chance to learn a new skill in the picturesque East Lothian countryside. If you have more time to spare, our week-long courses provide a deeper dive into the craft.

Embrace New Hobbies

Retirement is the ideal time to rediscover interests that may have taken a backseat during your working years. For those seeking a creative and fulfilling activity in retirement, woodworking is an incredibly rewarding option.

Chippendale School’s 10-week woodworking course offers an intensive, hands-on education in woodworking and furniture making. Designed for beginners and hobbyists alike, the programme covers a broad range of skills, from mastering hand techniques like sawing, chiselling, and hand planing to safely and expertly operating machinery such as band saws and pillar drills. Under the guidance of our expert tutors, you will gain practical skills while creating your own furniture and wee keepsakes.

Beyond the practical, our courses offer a real sense of community. From retirees to school leavers, you will work alongside and connect with others who share your enthusiasm for woodworking!

Volunteering and Giving Back

Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back to your community while adding a sense of purpose to your golden years. Whether it’s mentoring, supporting local initiatives, or simply lending a helping hand in your local charity shop, contributing your time and skills can make a meaningful impact. It’s also a great way to meet new people!

Here in East Lothian and nearby Edinburgh, there are many opportunities to get involved. Local organisation Volunteer East Lothian has a list of volunteering opportunities across  East Lothian.

Staying Active and Healthy

With more time on your hands, retirement is a great opportunity to explore activities that keep you healthy and fit. Joining a walking club, trying yoga, or spending time gardening are all excellent ways to stay physically active while lifting your spirits.
