This year’s Student of the Year is Honor Dalrymple, from East Lothian, a former structural engineer whose training has given her particular design skills.
“The beauty of Honor’s work, which included a cabinet, oak desk and chairs, was exemplary. Her designs were excellent and the quality of her making was sublime,” said Anselm Fraser, school principal, who presented her with her graduation certificate and winner’s Quaich.
Her previous career was sometimes a frustrating profession, with structural engineers only being required to work on aspects of a project – rather than from start to finish.
However, her training gave her particular design skills – for example, being able to visualise in 3D, understanding structure, and the strength and limitations of materials.
Honor’s design and making skills were evident from the start of the course, when she took second place in our bedside cabinet competition, as chosen by the school’s teaching staff.
Her four-leg pine cabinet veneered in rosewood, is a beautifully-constructed piece of furniture that perfectly balances form and function.
